Howdy all!
Holy cow it's been a long time. Since my last post, let's see... Well, I've been down to Australia and back for one thing. In fact I was down there for one month with many many deep and grateful thanks to my Aussie friend who made it possible (and his family who put up with me for several weeks including a nice little fainting spell ha ha).
In terms of comics, well, the good news is that I've been drawing up a storm lately. Yes, I know, nothing's been posted... but it is there. I'm actually reworking my website (yes, yes, I know, yet again).
In terms of what's coming up, I'd like to point out the Free Comics Book day at Englewood Library in Englewood, CO on Saturday May 3rd from 11 AM to 2 PM. I will be there along with my "partner in crime" John from Gypsygirl Press. It should be pretty fun.
What else... Oh yes, my little sister has gotten married! (Holy cow, I never ever thought she'd get married before me...). But I'm so very very happy for her. She looked beautiful and seems quite happy! Congrats congrats!
Also last weekend, my friends over at Enshin Karate told me about the International Sabaki Tournament. Man was that awesome! I was reading a post from Aikido Sensei Gaku Homma the other day (see it here). The article discussed the difference between fighting technique (bujutsu or 武術) and the "Way of Martial Arts" (budou or 武道). To summarize briefly, fighting technique is simply the blunt "what works" aspect of fighting in a kill or be killed primitive sort of spirit. In contrast, budou or "the way" of martial arts is very introspective and, as Homma Sensei says it, concerned with "man's search for self". My point in bringing all this up is that the Enshin tournament was very much a "budou" tournament (as opposed to "cage fighting" or some other vulgar beat-up tournament).
I must say, seeing that tournament really brought my feeling of love and respect for the martial arts back up to the surface. As some of you may know, I have studied Judo, Kendo, Shotokan Karate, and most recently Aikido. I especially love Aikido. It was a hard decision I made back in 2004 to discontinue my study of Aikido in order to further pursue my dream of being a comic artist. I still feel strongly that I made the right decision and I still shake with excitement about the thought of putting out a truly worthy comic that might just maybe influence and reach out to a reader as so many of the wonderful stories I have read have done for me. That having been said, I miss the martial arts. Perhaps I can find the time to continue again....
But with that, I head out to the store. I'm going to try to make a pizza from scratch tonight (including the sauce). After seeing the great video on "The Story of Stuff", I was reminded about how much trash we generate. Also, given the influence from great books like "The Omnivore's Dilemma", I'm trying to make my food with less trash production and a more healthy "from scratch" base. Anyhow, we'll see how well I can pull it off. I figured I'd start with some "soul food" like pizza to help me ease my way into it... ha ha.
OK, cheers and be good!
